Question 1

How long do AC systems last in Melbourne, FL?

Accepted Answer

The average lifespan of a central air conditioning system in Florida is 10 years. We find that larger components start to fail at 10 years, which causes expensive repair bills. Most manufacturer warranties are 10 years long, so parts are no longer under warranty. Regular maintenance helps the equipment run as efficiently as possible, often prolonging the unit's life.

Question 2

How does AC work?

Accepted Answer

Your air conditioning system does not bring cold air into your home. On the contrary, it is designed to remove heat from inside your home and bring it outside. The refrigerant inside the system absorbs heat and carries it to the outside condensing unit, where it releases the heat to the outside air.

Question 3

Why is my drain line backing up?

Accepted Answer

The AC drain line typically runs from the inside unit underground and exits outside the home. It has standing water sitting inside it that can grow bacteria and sludge over time, and that sludge can create a clog that backs water up into your home. We recommend adding 1–2 cups of distilled vinegar to your drain line every 3 months to prevent sludge build-up.

Question 4

Is it important to have maintenance on my air conditioner?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Maintenance helps reduce energy costs, improve your cooling power and help your system last. We suggest maintaining your AC system once every spring — easy with our professionals and our Maintenance Value Plan.

Question 5

What is the difference between a tune-up and a diagnostic?

Accepted Answer

A diagnostic service call is needed when your HVAC equipment is not working correctly — we test several components to find the cause of the malfunction. A tune-up is a maintenance call on a working system, and includes a safety inspection, coil sanitization and drain treatment.

Question 6

What does a heat pump do?

Accepted Answer

A heat pump can both heat and cool your home. Heat pumps are amazing for our climate because they're made to handle summers and mild winters, and they're eco-friendly — they move heat rather than generate it.

Question 7

How long does a furnace last in Florida?

Accepted Answer

The average furnace lasts about 10 to 15 years. Floridians can typically get theirs closer to the 15-year mark because of our warm climate, especially with quality professional service.

Question 8

What is a zone control system?

Accepted Answer

A zone control system segments your ductwork so you can heat or cool your home in zones. They're great for larger homes or homes with temperature differences from multiple floors or uneven natural light.

Question 9

How often should I replace my air filter in Florida?

Accepted Answer

As a rule of thumb, once a season — every three months. If your system runs more often, as it does in Florida, it may benefit from changing more often. Our professionals can advise for your home.

Question 10

What does MERV mean?

Accepted Answer

MERV stands for minimum efficiency reporting value. It measures a filter's ability to capture particles and helps you pick the right filter for your home.

Question 11

Why are some of my rooms warmer or cooler than others?

Accepted Answer

Airflow could be interrupted by a dirty air filter, you could have leaky ductwork to that room's vent, or your insulation may need to be replaced.

Question 12

Should I close vents to push more air into other rooms?

Accepted Answer

No. Closing a vent does not redirect airflow to other vents. The system sends air through the ductwork regardless — closing a vent just stops air entering that room, which can cost you more because the house takes longer to cool.

Question 13

How often do I need duct cleaning?

Accepted Answer

A good rule of thumb is once every 3–5 years. It prevents excess air resistance and keeps your ducts optimized for airflow.

Question 14

Should I keep my fan set to Auto, On or Circulate?

Accepted Answer

Auto. A fan that is constantly on adds wear and tear and costs you more energy. On Auto it only runs when your AC or heater does, which is more than enough for your home.

Accepted Answer
